Following its famed imperial Russian heritage, popularity in the collections of celebrities and billionaires - and of course iconic James Bond connections – you can now add Yorkshire to the enduring legacy of Fabergé.

What happens when Whitby’s oldest and most successful jeweller, joins forces with one of the world’s most prestigious jewellery manufacturers? Should you wish to find out, then Hamond’s exclusive Whitby Jet jewellery collection produced in collaboration with Fabergé provides some truly stunning answers.

The limited-edition Fabergé Whitby Jet collection has been produced to mark the start of W Hamond’s 160thanniversary celebrations which will be a theme running throughout 2020 at the Church Street jeweller. In addition to helping mark such a special year for the business, the new jewellery collection provides a treasured heirloom for which the whole of Yorkshire can enjoy.

The Whitby collection is only the second time Fabergé has used a British gemstone in any of its jewellery, building on the success of a range utilising Blue John, which is as synonymous with Derbyshire as jet is with Whitby.

As for the jewellery collection itself, a choice is provided between two distinctive Whitby Jet pendants, either as paired Whitby Jet domes separated by a diamond centre, or as a trademark Fabergé surprise locket. For the surprise inside, what could be more iconic than using a miniature Whitby Abbey which is detailed to exquisite perfection and sits on a platform of Whitby Jet. Both designs have been worked on by skilled W Hamond and Fabergé craftsmen and offered in 18ct rose, white or yellow gold for the diamond pendant and 18ct yellow or 18ct white gold for the surprise locket.

Any Fabergé collection wouldn’t be complete without a classic ‘objet’ piece and the Yorkshire jeweller doesn’t disappoint. The showpiece for W Hamond comes in the form of a wonderful free-standing egg mounted on a Whitby Jet base. There is no question this highly desirable piece must be seen first-hand for anyone to be truly awed by its delicacy and design. The 18ct yellow gold vermeil piece features green guilloche enamel, round white diamonds and opens to reveal an 18ct gold Whitby Abbey which, as with the lockets, sits on a pedestal of Whitby Jet. Even before the egg is opened to reveal its Whitby surprise the detailing on the outside is striking with Whitby Jet featuring on the lid and most spectacularly on the base as it is framed by the iconic window design of Whitby Abbey.

All the Whitby Jet used in the collection has been locally sourced and passed through W Hamond’s own workshop to finish their part of the process before moving on to the next stage at Fabergé.

Having overseen the development and been at the forefront in bringing this new collection to life, W Hamond Jewellery Designer Rebecca Sellors commented “For our workshop the collaboration offered many unique opportunities and insights, with one of the highlights being a rare glimpse into the expert Fabergé enamelling craftsmanship inside their London atelier workshop.”

In also recognising the significance this collection has for British gemstones and jewellery design – and the local area – Rebecca went on to explain “It is a really big endorsement and a demonstration of the high regard in which Whitby Jet is held that a world-renowned name such as Fabergé want to work with us – and we are all very excited about the finished designs. What’s more, this collaboration will allow W Hamond to once again set the benchmark for authentic Whitby Jet craftsmanship with a range of highly desirable, collectible and wearable jewellery pieces.”

A 40th year anniversary in any business is always special, yet when your business is involved with the design and manufacture of fine jewellery with British gemstones, what better is there to celebrate by joining forces with the world’s most iconic artist jeweller in the creation of new and exquisite jewellery pieces.

Such a collaboration has come wonderfully to life as C W Sellors – marking 40 years in business in 2019 – joined forces with the London atelier workshop of Fabergé to launch a limited collection of Derbyshire Blue John egg designs.

With C W Sellors’ continued aim of showcasing the best of British gemstones designs to the world, combined with Fabergé’s ceaseless quest to find and use the finest materials in their creations, the launch of this new collection marks the first time Fabergé have used British gemstones to craft their iconic pieces.

Having been involved in many projects over his four decades in the industry, Chris Sellors – Managing Director of C W Sellors – knows this one is a little bit different “Whether potential customers view the collection with a passion for Fabergé, or just a love of jewellery design, my hope it continues to rightly raise the bar (worldwide) for Blue John and British gemstones”

Consisting of a choice of two Blue John pendants, either as two halves set with a diamond centre or as a Fabergé trademark surprise locket - in this case a finely wrought Derbyshire Rose design, both designs have been worked on by skilled Fabergé craftsmen and offered in 18ct rose, white or yellow gold for the diamond pendant and 18ct yellow gold for the surprise locket. With the finest selected Derbyshire Blue John being used in each, the surprise pendant also features quality diamonds arranged on intricate guilloche and precious glass enamel.

The collection also features two objet eggs with an arrangement of flowers as their surprise and set on Blue John plinths – carved in C W Sellors Ashbourne workshop. To mark the arrival of their new Faberge Blue John collection, those who had made a pre-order of either design were recently invited to Chatsworth House by C W Sellors to receive their chosen piece.

Following a personal tour of the treasures of Chatsworth House and their latest exhibition The Dog – A Celebration at Chatsworth, a champagne reception awaited the guests in the private library of the House, followed by an insight into the Fabergé and Blue John pieces of Chatsworth House provided by Sash Giles - Curator of Decorative Arts at Chatsworth. To end the evening, the lucky customers were then presented with their chosen limited-edition Fabergé Blue John piece.

Having overseen the development and launch of the new collection, C W Sellors Jewellery Designer Rebecca Sellors commented “As a thank you to the customers who had reserved the first of these limited-edition pieces, we wanted offer a handover experience to remember, which hopefully we succeeded in doing with the help of Chatsworth House."
