Lapis

The Lapis gemstone, also known as lapis lazuli, is a beautiful opaque stone that boasts deep, celestial blue tones and has been mined since the early seventh millennium BC. Since it was first discovered, Lapis has been used by some of the most influential people in history. Towards the end of the Middle Ages, it was exported to Europe where it was ground into powder and used by artists like Masaccio, Perugino, Titian and Vermeer who often decorated the clothing of the central figures in their paintings in the regal blue colour of Lapis. Royal figures like Tutankhamun even had Lapis set around the eyes of his funeral mask to imitate the kohl makeup he would wear, while Queen Cleopatra was thought to have used powdered lapis for eye shadow.

The Lapis stone still remains one of the most sought after stones today thanks to its majestic blue colour which is often marked by golden flecks making it reminiscent of the night sky. At C W Sellors, we have transformed the precious gemstone into exquisite pieces of jewellery, all which have been carefully handmade by our talented craftsman in our workshops in Derbyshire. Because every piece of our Lapis jewellery is made from scratch, we can combine it with a variety of different metals and stones to create a completely unique and personalised look.
